Dubai based lighting design consultancy Studio N has created a delicately balanced lighting scheme for 42 Midtown, a vibrant dining destination from Jumeirah that blends the effortless sophistication of a New York restaurant with a touch of European flavour.
Located in Zabeel House, The Greens, the restaurant features a chic meets laid-back interior aesthetic from the team at Keane. Studio N’s lighting scheme reinforces the vibrancy of the design narrative and uses a subtle blend of integrated and decorative illumination to enhance the ambience and accentuate the richness of the material palette.
A showpiece open kitchen is one of the scheme’s main focal points and features a back lit surface that brings depth and drama to the overall design. Light was carefully concealed behind the textured surface to gently filter through the glass and emit a mesmerising orange glow. The effect instantly draws the eye to the food preparation area and evokes a warm and welcoming feel. Dark-toned decorative pendants provide an additional layer of task lighting above the countertop and are deliberately subdued to work seamlessly with the setting.
Throughout the restaurant, strategically positioned track lighting and spotlights create a comfortable layer of ambient light above the tables and casual seating areas. Decorative pendants add visual interest above the booth seating areas and are supported at a lower level by diffuse lines of light that evoke a sense of intimacy and emphasise the curved profile of the furnishings.
An Art Deco inspired bar adds a strong dose of relaxed glamour to the experience and is distinguishable for its contrasting colourways and textures. Here, illumination was integrated within the joinery to draw out the characteristics of the green tiled walls and metallic shelving units. A warm run of light washes the surface of the bar with light at floor level for further contrast, and brass and stone pendants create an easy rhythm of light along the bar to encourage guests to relax and linger.
