SENSASIA Stories Spa
DUBAI

This flagship retreat, created by architecture and interior design studio Roar, is brought to life by clever lighting techniques that enhance the tranquil yet dramatic pan-Asian design, taking clients on a luxurious sensory journey.

Design Concept

Our lighting concept takes its cue from the contemporary interior architecture and muted materials, using different approaches to draw out the layers of detail, texture and tone. Clients enter the spa from a busy mall, so the transition from retail to spa setting is central to the design. The lighting scheme creates a sense of escapism, enhancing the intimacy and peacefulness inside.

Key Lighting Solutions

Layers of light

A base layer of soft illumination anchors the design and creates a relaxing mood. Concealed lines of light and minimal, low-glare downlights strike the right balance between playful yet comfortable lighting. Additional layers bring rhythm, drama and depth while also highlighting rich textures.

Feature lighting in the central courtyard

Large illuminated arches form a bold feature in the courtyard, bringing movement and theatre to the space. The arched theme continues in reception, where discreet lights tucked into arch-shaped shelving add a layer of accent.

Highlighting materials and surfaces

Lighting emphasises natural characteristics of materials like wood and slate. Linear grazers pick out the texture of stone walls, while concealed illumination injects drama into stairs and decorative ceilings.

Designing without natural light

Using only artificial illumination allows for more precise balancing of light levels to bring depth, ambience and visual comfort to the spa through controlled intensity, direction, layering and contrast.

Adaptive lighting for personalised experiences

A lighting control system supports smooth transitions between various lighting scenes across different areas. For example, in treatment rooms, tailored settings create a sense of peace and relaxation while also providing practical functionality.
