Mausam at The Dubai Mall is an immersive dining concept that takes its cue from the sweeping arches and red sandstone hues of Indian architecture. Designed by 4Space, the restaurant is characterised by warm and inviting spaces, anchored by a dramatic ceiling that pays homage to Red Fort in Delhi – a historic piece of Mughal architecture.
Our approach was to integrate light within the space to emphasise the fluidity and materiality of the scheme’s architectural features. At a lower level, the lighting scheme elevates the ambience, creating cosy pockets of warmth and vibrancy where customers can socialise and relax.
A sculptural feature ceiling dominates the space, echoing the traditional arches and earthy tones of India’s Red Fort. Lines of light were carefully concealed within the metal rings to graze the smooth surfaces of the ceiling, adding depth to the terracotta patina and definition to the architectural curves.
Beneath the centrepiece ceiling, intricate latticework inspired by Mughal design frames the dining booths. Indirect lines of lights produce a soft, intimate glow around the seating areas, illuminating the metalwork above to produce delicate patterns of light and shadow.
Throughout the restaurant, varying tones of light were used to emulate the vibrancy of Indian spices. At a customer level, a colour temperature of 2700K evokes warmth and comfort. Higher up, the colour temperature shifts to 3000K to lend a touch of richness and depth to the architecture.
The exterior terrace is softy illuminated through a Mughal-inspired archway, spike lights in the planting and atmospheric floor lanterns. Minimalist linear fittings were discreetly concealed within the floor and arches of the walkway, transforming it into a theatrical focal point when the terrace comes alive after dark.
