5 Minutes with… Stephanie Hreiki

Designing for the joy of seeing projects go from concept to reality, Stephanie Hreiki shares what fuels her passion for lighting, hints at how AI is reshaping design, and reveals why materiality and contrast are the key to a great scheme.

Q: Tell us about yourself – and what you love most about working with light.

A: I’m a Senior Lighting Designer with a deep appreciation for how light influences atmosphere and emotion. My background in interior architecture helps me understand space, but lighting brings it all to life.

What I love most is seeing a design come to life on site. Watching a project move from concept to reality feels rewarding every time. Each scheme teaches me something new, and that constant learning curve is what I value most.

Q: Give us an insight into life at Studio N.

A: The design process is highly collaborative and fast-paced. Ideas are constantly shared, challenged and refined as a team. We work together to come up with a clear and cohesive vision for every project, always balancing innovation with technical precision.

The people make this process special. There’s an exceptional pool of talent across the studio. It’s so inspiring to be surrounded by that level of creativity and knowledge.

Q: What inspires you right now?

A: I’m genuinely inspired by how AI is beginning to support our work, especially in the realm of visuals and rendering. It’s changing how we articulate ideas to clients and help them understand the design intent earlier in the design process.

That said, the human hand is still essential. AI can generate ideas quickly and clearly, but it’s the designer who edits, refines and applies judgement to turn these concepts into a workable design.

Q: Favourite colour of light?

A: 2700K is my favourite colour temperature. It creates warmth and feels calm and human, making spaces feel relaxed rather than overly clinical.

Q: Daylight or artificial light?

A: Daylight, without hesitation. There is something deeply inspiring about its softness, variation and authenticity.

Q: Name one lighting rule you love to break.

A: Uniformity. It has its place, but overly uniform lighting can make a space feel flat. Contrast creates depth, hierarchy and emotion – especially in a hospitality or residential environment.

Q: What detail is often overlooked in a lighting scheme?

A: Materiality and the way that light interacts with different surfaces. Dark finishes absorb significantly more light, and while this can dramatically affect the overall perception of a space, it’s often overlooked.

Q: Which recent trend has had the biggest impact on lighting design?

A: Biophilic design. As people become more disconnected from nature, there’s a stronger desire to recreate a natural atmosphere indoors. Naturally, light can play a key role in achieving that connection.

Q: What’s the biggest misconception about lighting designers?

A: That we simply specify fixtures or work with electricity. Lighting design is much more complex and requires a broad understanding of the science and art of light.
